Chandrashekhar had a number of surprise visitors at the hospital.
Bhim Army chief Chandrashekhar Azad had publicly declared in New Delhi on Saturday that if the opposition’s mahagathbandhan fails to field strong candidate against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister Smriti Irani, Bhim Army would field its own candidates against them.
Chandrashekhar and his supporters were taken into custody by the police, from Deoband, Saharanpur. They were taken into custody when they were planning to take out a procession to Muzaffarnagar by using more than stipulated number of motorcycles in a political rally. This was in violation of the model code of conduct set in since the announcement of poll schedule by the Election Commission of India.
Chandrashekhar was subsequently taken ill after being detained. He was then admitted to Anand Hospital in Meerut. Doctors said that Chandrashekhar had difficulty in breathing. Right now, his condition has improved. He is being given better treatment facilities.
Priyanka Gandhi meets Bhim Army Chief Chandrasekhar.
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Congress General Secretary of Western UP Jyotiraditya Scindia and several senior Congress leaders including Congress State President Raj Babbar in UP reached Meerut to meet Chandrasekhar. The police administration came to action on the information of senior Congress leaders reaching Meerut. Police Force of several police stations were deployed outside the Anand Hospital for security.
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra reached Anand Hospital in Meerut and met Chandrasekhar. She told media persons, ‘If you wish, you can politicize it, I will not do, I liked the struggle of this boy. I’ll meet Chandrasekhar first, please go out.’ She then met Chandrasekhar in a closed room.
Raj Babbar, while explaining, brought the journalists out of the hospital premises.
When she got out of the room after the meeting, the media questioned Priyanka Gandhi, and she became irritated. Journalists asked her whether Chandra Shekhar will contest from any seat by joining the Congress. On this, Priyanka expressed her disappointment with the reporters and said, “Please do not link politics to it”.
Ms Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said that the Yogi Government wants to crush Chandrasekhar’s voice. The voice of the young man is being suppressed. The Yogi government has become arrogant.
Ms Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially joined Congress and was made AICC incharge of Uttar Pradesh (East) on January 23. Her husband Robert Vadra is facing ED questions at present.
Chandrashekhar said Ms Priyanka Gandhi Vadra met him purely on humanitarian grounds, and “in her individual capacity of a sister”. “She enquired about my health and asked me what led to my arrest. Our conversation revolved around this. We didn’t discuss politics. I was so happy to see her. At least someone came to see me,” Azad told media after their meeting.
Chandrasekhar says that I have nothing to do with the Congress. He said that he is with the SP-BSP coalition. On the question of contesting with the Congress, Chandrasekhar said that he was born in the Bahujan Samaj and would die only in the Bahujan Samaj.
‘If the alliance cooperates, then I will contest against Narendra Modi. I will work to send him to Gujarat by defeating him. On the question of contesting from Nagina, he said, if the SP-BSP combine wanted, then I will contest from where Narendra Modi will contest election,’ he said.
Will he try to bring SP, BSP and Congress together? In response, he said that it was not in his hands; if the office-bearers want it, the SP-BSP and Congress will be brought together. He said, “I am just a social worker. Yes, but to defeat Modi, I will fight till my last breath”.
Changing Battle Lines in U.P.
After this meeting between Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Bhim Army Chief Chandrashekhar, admitted in the hospital, political movements in western UP have been stirred. It is believed that this meeting can lead to new equations in the elections. Imran Masood’s initiative can also be seen.
Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati is not exactly happy with this meeting and may now field candidates from Raebareli or Amethi — both Congress bastions in Uttar Pradesh, which the BSP-SP alliance had earlier decided to not field any candidate from.
After meeting Chandra Shekhar, all leaders, including Priyanka Gandhi, left for Delhi.
