Opposition Support Pour in for Mamata Banerjee

India News

When Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials approached to question Kolkata Commissioner Rajeev Kumar in chit fund scam cases, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her team protested it. She chose to sit on a dharna near the Metro Channel. Unruly scenes were witnessed in front of Kolkata police commissioner Rajeev Kumar’s official residence on Sunday evening.

Thereafter, leaders from across the country cutting across party lines came out in her support. They attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi of making “a complete mockery of democracy and federal structure.”

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is expected to visit Kolkata today to extend his support to Mamata Banerjee.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also spoke to Mamata Banerjee and conveyed his party’s support to her dharna against the CBI’s action against Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar.

“Just spoke to @MamataOfficial didi to convey the support of @JKNC_ as she sits in dharna. The use of the CBI as a political tool has crossed all limits as has the Modi government’s misuse of institutions. A former CM having such little regard for India’s federalism is shocking.”

Congress chief Rahul Gandhi tweeted: “I spoke with Mamata Di tonight and told her we stand shoulder to shoulder with her. The happenings in Bengal are a part of the unrelenting attack on India’s institutions by Mr Modi & the BJP. The entire opposition will stand together & defeat these fascist forces.”

Former Prime Minister HD Devegowda also came in support of Mamata Banerjee and attacked the Modi government.

“I am shocked learning about the CBI rushing to arrest the Police Commissioner and subsequent developments in West Bengal. The country has faced similar kind of unconstitutional methods during the Emergency. Situation in WB is similar to that of the emergency days. #SaveDemocracy.”

TMC MP Derek O’Brien said, “They landed with 40 CBI officials at police commissioner’s residence in Kolkata. They don’t even have a search warrant. The perpetrators are actually Modi, Shah and Ajit Doval, I heard it from my sources and I say this with full responsibility.”

Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav tweeted: “The BJP government’s torturing techniques and the CBI openly political misuse have put the country, the Constitution and the public’s independence in danger. We support Mamata Banerjee’s dharna against it. Today, the Opposition and the public is uniting to defeat the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections.”

“The independence of every institution has been compromised under this fascist BJP Government. I stand with @MamataOfficial Didi in her fight to protect the federal structure of this country and to save democracy,” tweeted DMK chief MK Stalin.
