Congress president Rahul Gandhi will contest from two Lok Sabha seats. Apart from his traditional seat in Amethi in Uttar Pradesh, he will also be a Congress candidate from Wayanad Lok Sabha seat of Kerala.
Former Defense Minister and Congress leader AK Antony had announced in a press conference that Rahul Gandhi will contest the 2019 election from Wayanad and Amethi.
Prior to this, Sonia Gandhi had also contested the election from Bellary in Karnataka, besides Rae Bareli, while holding the Congress presidency.
This announcement was made at a time when Congress President Rahul Gandhi is on a tour of South India on Sunday. On Sunday, spokesman Randeep Surjewala said that Rahul Gandhi has always been saying that Amethi has been his work area and will remain, but this decision has been taken after the continuous demands from South India.
Surjewala said that Wayanad is an important area in geographical and cultural terms. Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are the regions connecting these three provinces. He alleged that BJP has a repressive policy towards these three states. He said that Congress President Rahul Gandhi will be able to represent these three states from here.
Rahul Gandhi was sent a proposal to contest the elections from these three states of south India. Kerala Congress, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee passed a resolution and said that Rahul Gandhi would contest from anywhere in his state.
The Congress leaders of all three states claim that Rahul Gandhi will win from where he will be standing in the field, with a heavy majority. Firstly the Kerala Congress unit had not only passed this resolution, but later the leaders of the party also claimed that Rahul Gandhi would contest from Wayanad too.
When asked whether Rahul Gandhi was scared to contest from Amethi, the traditional seat of the Gandhi family, Union minister Maneka Gandhi, aunt of Rahul Gandhi and BJP leader, said, “It’s up to him where he wants to contest from, how will I know whether he got scared or not?”
The Union minister sought to play down her nephew’s decision to contest from two seats during Lok Sabha elections 2019. “We will win from both the seats,” she has said.
At present, the Left front is the ruling party in Kerala. M I Shanav of Congress is the current MP of Wayanad.
Wayanad is considered to be a safe seat for Congress. During 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had bagged 41 per cent of the votes polled.
BJP chief Amit Shah Sunday ridiculed Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s decision to contest from Wayanad Lok Sabha constituency, saying he has “fled” to Kerala fearing that Amethi voters will seek an account of work done by him and his party over the years.
Shah was speaking at his first election meeting in western UP, where voting will be held on April 11. The BJP had won all eight Lok Sabha seats in the region in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
